Damage to the optic nerve is most commonly caused by either acute or chronic increases in intraocular pressure of the eye. Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is the most common cause of poor vision in people over 50 years of age. It is caused by the deterioration of the macular region of the retina resulting in central vision loss, loss of visual acuity, visual distortion, the presence of black patches in vision and the dimming of colour vision. There are two forms of macular degeneration; the dry form and the wet form.
